Caves of Altamira

4 km from Santillana del Mar are the Altamira Caves, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. They are one of the most famous caves of prehistoric paintings in Europe and the World, accidentally discovered by a hunter in 1869. They are called the Sistine Chapel of Cave Art. The paintings, for the most part, were executed in the Magdalenian era (between 14,000 and 9,500 BC). The vault is covered with figures of bison, horses, a wild boar and a 2.20 m deer.

El Soplao Caves

One of the most impressive caves in the world thanks to its eccentric formations of stalactites and stalagmites. 44 km from Santillana del Mar.

Santo Toribio de Liébana

The Monastery of Santo Toribio preserves the “Lignum crucis”, the largest preserved portion of the crucifixion cross in the world. 86 km from Santillana del Mar.

El Castillo Cave

Another of the Paleolithic wonders that can be visited in Puente Viesgo, just 24 km from Santillana del Mar.
